'Assess the importance of marketing in the media area you have studied'

   In the film industry, making sure your film is successfully marketed is an important step in the distribution. The marketing step is essential for making a successful film. Film makers use many different types of marketing techniques to get through to potential viewers. 

            These different types of marketing techniques offer the film makers different ways to reach out to different audiences. One of these marketing technique is Cross promotion. An example of cross promotion is with the Beauty and the Beast film. The film makers had companies such as Kohl’s, offer exclusive items and merchandise to help the film. Along with Kohl’s, Morgan Taylor made a set of movie-themed nail polish colors. These products reached many different potential viewers. These tactics helped the film grossed $1.3 billion worldwide. Another film that used Cross promotion for their marketing is the movie Jurassic world. The makers of Jurassic world created video games and toys with Lego and even candy to help promote the film to a specific audience. Along with the toys and video games, using their parent company Universal Studios got Comcast’s television companies to get a run of earlier Jurassic Park movies and have marathons and sneak previews with Spielberg and Chris Pratt on NBC. This marketing technique help get through to all types of audiences.  

         Along with cross promotion, synergy is used by many film makers to help push their film out to different audiences. One film that used synergy to help promote their film was Spider-man-homecoming. In an attempt to promote Marvel’s film, the film makers paired up with a commonly eaten cereal brand called Cinnamon Toast Crunch. The cereal offered a free toy inside the box. Marvel’s film ended up grossing 800 million dollars worldwide. Another Movie that used synergy for their marketing tactic was Beauty and the beast film. Disney exercised corporate synergy when a couple of the movie’s stars hosted a special edition of ‘The Bachelor’ on ABC to promote the upcoming release. This technique proved to be helpful with promoting the film. 

            Social media is always a big tool used by film makers to promote movies. In todays’ day-in-age social media is big part of everyone’s daily lives. Film making and distribution is all done online so naturally the film makers are going to market it on social media. Through the internet anyone can reach and watch any film, whether it is by downloading it online or through a social media app.  One film that used social media as their marketing tactic was the movie Jurassic world. There were 4 main trailers distributed around the internet and TV and 4-5 other TV spots. The film makers also made an Easter Egg hunt that was given out as Easter holiday marketing strategy and was completely online. This appealed to many younger potential viewers. 

          An essential part of the distribution process is having the hard copies. Hard copies are the movie posters that are given to the public to peak the viewers interest. All movies no matter what genre uses this tactic to peak the interest of potential viewers. These posters give a little bit of an insight to what the movie might be about. For example, the movie Spider-man homecoming had a poster of the main character, Spider-man with the word's “homecoming”. This visual gave use an inside sneak peek into this movie. The audience could infer that the movie was going to be about the superhero Spider-man and maybe show his life as a teenager. Another movie that used hard copies as a marketing technique was Jurassic world. Jurassic world had posters with new dinosaurs along with a new character on the front of the posters. The viewers could infer that the movies were going to show dinosaurs as they have before with a new twist. 

Overall Marketing is essential to the distribution of films. Marketing helps get through to potential viewers. The way they do this is by using Synergy, Cross promotion, social media, and hard copies. Without a clever way of marketing a film would not be able to be successful film.

   In the extract of the tv show 24, there were many different camera angles, sounds and editing techniques used to convey an over laying theme. The director used these techniques to create a sense of tension buildup in the intense atmosphere of the clip. All of these special techniques are used to create the theme of the clip. This overall theme is, during times of trouble and stress, one must describe if power is more important than trust.

   In the opening scenes a woman in an interrogation room can be seen. While in this shoot the viewers can observe the dark and unnatural lighting that creates a tense, ominous mood. The only natural lighting came from the bared windows which made the scenes more serious. Whilst in this room the camera used a zoom towards the female to emphasis that she is alone and therefore had no initial power. The zoom also showed the initial emotions of the female to when the male character walked into the room, which was a lack of trust. Another important zoom that happened in that scene was a zoom into the surveillance camera which showed that the two characters were being watched. This meant that the male could not harm the female character. The last zoom that the camera used in the first scene was a zoom into a clock. This could signify the importance of time in their situation. The director also used an eye line match throughout the interrogation scenes to really hone on the characters emotions. The eye line match was used to show the emotions while their conversation was happening. It showed the relationship between the object and the person. For example, the female character had a connection with the clock. It showed how crunched they were on time.

   In the next scene, the mood became more intense while the male character threw a table, trying to intimidate the female character. In this scene viewers can observe the dialogue used in the scene. This dialogue showed the trust issues that the characters have for one another. Going back to the surveillance camera shot, this scene with dialogue also showed that the male character could not harm the female, or he would have been kicked off the ‘case’. This gave the female character the power in this situation. He woman stated, “I guess you’re just going to have to follow my lead.” In this part the female almost sounds smug with her tone and confident in the way that she has the power. Along with dialogue, the director also used close- up shots. These shots were used to show emotions such as frustration and stress conveyed by the male character while the female character conveyed a smug and clam emotion. We can see this in the interrogation room when the male threw the table then proceeded to get into the female’s face. This aspect added an extra layer of tension between the characters. Along with dialogue and close-up shots, the director also added crosscutting in this scene. This cross cutting was used to show the contrasting characters while they fight for the power in the situation and it shows the scenes of the police watching the whole fight unfold, waiting to eventually stop the fight. This showed how intense the scene was on both ends.

   For the last scene it shows the two strong minded characters continue to argue. While this argue grew, the male character went to extremes and ended up choking the female character. During this scene viewers can see the way the two actors collided with one another. Both wanting power instead of trusting one another. The actors use these tensions to show the power struggle between the two. In this particular scene, the actor really conveyed the frustration and the anger they had with one another. Along with the main characters the police in this scene conveyed a sense of panic and alertness. When the male character choked the female character, he was showing his dominance over her. While the female showed a struggle in this scene.  Along with actors the director also put incidental music in this very intense scene. This music made the scene more intense and almost uneasy. It showed the panic in the room as soon as he charged at the female character.

   All together these techniques used such as zoom, lighting and eye line match help convey the over all theme. During times of trouble and stress one must describe if power is more important than trust. These techniques help make a strong story that keeps the audiences intrigued.

CCR for final project

This is my CCR for the final project. In this CCR I tried to make an interview type of video. In the video I go through what I did for the movie and my interviewer asked me some important questions such as “ How does your product use or challenge conventions?”. 

Final project

This was my group and I’s final project. For this project my team and I got to choose a genre for a movie. We choose to do a horror genera in our project. Before we got to filming my team and I had to search up conventions that were common in horror movies. After that we got to start our filming script, storyboard  and sound script for the movie. Then finally we got to film. This project was were we got to let our skills show. Our movie is called “signed the watcher”. This movie is about a group of friends that realize their friend had gone missing, only to find out she had been murdered.
